Unconscious bias has never been under the spotlight more than it is currently. Finding ways to identify and then ‘fix’ this type of bias are significant issues to explore. Unconscious decision making has been important in the survival and evolution of our species. It is based on what feels safe to us in certain situations. A number of factors contribute to our view of the world and make us who we are – our experiences, our preferences, our education, our upbringing, all play a part.
According to the article whilst this “is not necessarily a bad thing – it becomes problematic when we start treating groups of people as less favourable, or we make bad decisions based on that model.” Given that no-one is immune to bias the important question becomes what are some of the ways we can employ to address it.
